Ideas like what, to how we can create simply affordable technologies for people in Africa. Share your idea and then the audience will ask questions, help you brainstorm or maybe even help out to make it a reality. Invite your brainiac friends. The moderator will be announced later.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Internships available for qualified clean energy businesses.

AdvantageWest is pleased to announce a call for applications for clean energy businesses to submit an internship position for consideration for the AdvantageGreen Energy Internships Program.

The AdvantageGreen Energy Internships Program, which has been made possible through the support of the NC State Energy Office, will place nine, 12-month paid internships with regional clean energy businesses providing experiential learning and training in a well-supported and supervised work environment. All businesses will have adequate work space and resources for their intern’s assigned duties. Preference will be given to positions that maximize the desired impacts of this project as outlined in the Business Application Packet on the AdvantageGreen web page here. Applications are due Friday August 13 at 5 pm.

For students: Available internship positions and details on how to apply will be announced on Monday August 23.

How do we dramatically reduce the amount of waste built into our economic system?  The waste and inefficiency that pervades our systems has disastrous consequences – from social injustice to ecological devastation, from financial disease even to spiritual disconnection.  The industrial revolution was based on the premise that waste had negligible inherent economic cost.  We’re now understanding that waste is very expensive, when viewed in a larger context.  We need a new type of revolution – a new level of awareness made possible by our connected technologies.

What if we could balance supply and demand, in real-time, at the level of every transaction?  What if we could conduct our businesses with a broader understanding of the economic value of interconnectedness?  What if we could bring a new level of transparency to all of our business dealings?  What are the privacy implications? How might transparency help us reduce the waste, and advance the cause of sustainability?  What do we need to sacrifice to move towards this vision?

The Ecological and Economic Argument for Urbanism

Joe Minicozzi will present an environmental and economic analysis of urban design projects and the specific case study of the I-26 project.  Joe will update the audience on the work of the Asheville Design Center and the progress they have achieved with NCDOT over the last year of work.  Additionally, Joe will present concepts of cost/benefit analysis and analytic tools that will be presented at February’s national Smart Growth Conference in Seattle.

Asheville Green Drinks Jan. 15, 2010 6 pm @ BoBo’s

The Asheville Green Opportunities Training Team (Asheville GO) is a green collar job training and placement program for disconnected youth and young adults.

The program combines service-learning projects, life skills training, classroom learning and case management to provide its members with the skills and experience they need to pursue careers that serve themselves, their community, and the planet.

On Friday Jan. 15 Asheville GO Members and staff will discuss the program and share with the audience some accomplishments from the 2009 program year.

Asheville’s city commissions are an opportunity for ordinary citizens to shape city policy.

Commissioners are appointed by city council, and the next deadline for applications to council are coming up on Wed, Jan. 6th, 2010.

TEN commissions have openings, including sustainability, transit, and river redevelopment.

Listen to citizens and staff who have served on and with commissions to learn what is involved, and why or why not you might want to apply; and ask them questions.
